OMNI WAR WATCH WEDNESDAYS, #162, JANUARY 31, 2024 .   Compiled by Dick Bennett.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists:  90 Seconds to Midnight,
John LaForge.  The New
B61-13 Nuclear Weapon.

A Moment of Historic Danger: It’s Still 90 Seconds to Midnight!
On Jan. 23, the Doomsday Clock was reset at 90 seconds to midnight, still the closest the Clock has ever been to midnight. In their announcement, The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, stewards of the Doomsday Clock, emphasized that the Clock could be turned back, but governments and people need to take urgent action. A variety of global threats cast menacing shadows over the 2024 Clock deliberations, including: the Russia-Ukraine war and deterioration of nuclear arms reduction agreements; the Climate Crisis and 2023’s official designation as the hottest year on record; the increased sophistication of genetic engineering; and the dramatic advance of generative AI which could magnify disinformation and corrupt the global information environment making it harder to solve the larger existential challenges. Watch the announcement; read more.

www.msn.com › en-us › news  What is the B61-13? Pentagon pursues nuclear weapon 24 times power of Hiroshima ...  Oct 31, 2023 · WASHINGTON, DC: The Pentagon has unveiled plans for a groundbreaking nuclear weapon, the B61-13, with a staggering 24 times the destructive power of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima….

A succinct denunciation of this insane overkill is John LaForge’s article “B61-13: Biden Orders Yet Another New H-Bomb.”  Nukewatch Quarterly (Winter 2023-24). (I could not find the article online;  see what you can do; I read it in my paper copy.) What can we as individuals do?  Disseminate his article to your fullest ability, including to all AR congressional reps, Christian ministers, city and state leaders.  The Pentagon plan needs Congressional authorization, “ which is nearly axiomatic when nuclear weapons spending is proposed.”  Let’s help John and Nukewatch try to break that mindless chain; choose a niche and stay with it.  --Dick
