Doing What’s
Within Our Power Where We Are to REDUCE
REDUCING POPULATION GROWTH, Making Our Families
SMALL,
Milton Saier, Jr. “Save the Earth; [If
You Already Have a Child] Don’t Give Birth.”
Free Inquiry (April/May 2023).
The
article concludes: “The human population
now exceeds eight billion and is expected to reach ten billion in thirty
years.” [This statement is supported by
a citation from the UN, footnote #11. ] “This fact alone guarantees suffering
and premature death over much of the globe, not just for a few but for billions
of people. . . .It seems that only with a very substantial reduction in the size
of the human population can we hope for a stable order for Earth’s biosphere
and its human inhabitants. And this will
only be possible when all world citizens have access to a full range of
contraceptive devices, medications, and procedures, including abortion. There are no other means by which we can
achieve universal sustainability, the prerequisite for continuing human life on
Earth. . . .Our government also seems unable to act sensibly on global warming,
the greatest threat to the biosphere after human population expansion.” [Saier was prof. of molecular biology at UC,
San Diego, and has authored “more than 600 scientific papers including several
books .”]

Doing What We Can Where We Are and INCREASING
COMPOSTING
Ozark Compost & Swap is a local business
picking up food waste from homes and businesses in Northwest Arkansas. They
collect waste from Fayetteville to Bella Vista, and then feed it to their
roughly 1 million worms. Folks that use their pickup service receive free worm
castings throughout the year for folks to use as a natural soil amendment in
potted plants or gardens. One of the great
benefits of the worm castings is that they are a huge benefit to soil health
overall. Healthy soils have the capacity to sequester and store carbon
from the atmosphere. If we can improve soil health globally, it is one
of the many ways to reverse the effects of global warming. Tina Flakowitz, Tina@OzarkCompost.com [This company understands that it must do its
tiny work aware of the climate emergency and as part of a planetary response. –D]
