POPULATION CONNECTION v. Population Growth and Climate Change

Population Connection is my favorite international reproductive health organization because it combines awareness of the connections among education and contraception in stopping population growth and warming, and the political advocacy essential to change.  Here is a recent letter from PC that summarizes their encompassing work.  [I have highlighted key words and phrases.]

Population Connection Updates!

Hi Mr. Bennett!

I hope this message finds you well and enjoying summer! I have been thinking of you and wanted to share a few updates on our work. The program YOU kicked off—alerting more Americans to the impacts of population growth on climate change—continues strong! In fact, it’s become a huge part of our outreach. The following graphic has become incredibly powerful in terms of bringing people to our movement to stabilize global population! As I know you’ll agree, it’s critical for more people to understand that slowing—and eventually stopping—population growth is key to our planet’s future.  [I can’t copy the graphic, it’s dramatic.  –D]

Empowering women and girls through family planning and access to formal education does far more to alleviate carbon emissions than recycling, driving electric cars, using recycled papers, and composting combined! What most people don’t realize is that stopping population growth can have such a tremendous impact on our climate! We’re doing our best to share this information far and wide.

In addition to raising the alarm, we continue to press our legislators to increase access to international family planning options, as well as to defend women’s access to reproductive health care services both here and abroad. At Population Connection Action Fund, we’re reimagining our hard-hitting #Fight4HER campaign to ensure that we can elect family planning champions running for office—this will be key to achieving our legislative goals!

We remain determined to repeal the Global Gag Rule forever; to increase U.S. investments in international family planning programs; and to reinstate women’s right to abortion access here in the U.S. after the Supreme Court decision dismantling Roe v. Wade.

Not only that, but you might know that we launched a new Global Partners program last year. What started small several years ago, with direct aid to two locally based nonprofits in Uganda and Guatemala, has now officially grown into a committed program with 19 grantees in nine developing countries across the world!  These small local nonprofits help to advance our mission with program services ranging from wildlife conservation to women’s reproductive health care and girls’ education. I’d love to talk to you more about this effort.

And we’re ramping up PopEd’s outreach further, with not just one, but three Leadership Institutes this summer and fall for our teacher-training volunteers, who volunteer their time to train other teachers on how to implement our population curricula in their classrooms, across the U.S. and in some territories abroad. Our teacher-trainers present more than two-thirds of our workshops, helping us to reach more than 12,000 new educators a year with our activities for their K-12 classrooms. We’ll be expanding our volunteer teacher-trainer presence in New Orleans, Seattle, and St. Louis this year.

Our World of 8 Billion student video contest, now in its 12th year, received more than 3,000 student entries, all competing to show their grasp of how population growth affects climate change, gender equality, and waste management. With thanks to the generous support of donors like you, we continue inspiring young minds to grapple with the effects of rapid population growth on our environment and human well-being.
You can view some of the inspiring winning entries, here: www.worldof8billion.org/winners-2023.

Thank you, again, for your generous support of our work. We have been fortunate to count on you as a partner in our long-term efforts to stabilize global population through education and advocacy! Thank you for your trust and vision.

In gratitude,

Shauna
