OMNI will resume its annual Remembrance of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and this year Celebrate the new UN Treaty banning nuclear weapons, on Sunday evening of August 8, at OMNI, 7p.m.,and to protest UAF nuclear weapons research. Join with us in yearning for the abolition of weapons of mass destruction capable of omnicide.

Despite the dispiriting Covid 19 and dangerous variants and continued failure of our leaders to meaningfully oppose nuclear weapons or the climate catastrophe, we gather at a time of hope with these two events: The UN Treaty to Abolish Nuclear Weapons came into force on January 22 when the necessary number of nations ratified the Treaty (outlaw US not signing), and COP26 UN Climate Change Conference will convene in Glasgow, Scotland, November 1-12, 2021. (COP26 is the next annual UN climate change conference. COP stands for Conference of the Parties, the countries that signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) – a treaty that came into force in 1994.)

Thus this year our Hiroshima/Nagasaki action will encompass Remembrance, Protest, and Praise.

Mayor Jordan will read the city’s Proclamation. Prof. Art Hobson and Abel Tomlinson will speak. Still on the Hill and other musical groups will play. Karen Takemoto will read names of the bomb’s victims. And more, believing we can abolish nuclear weapons if we will, and we still have time.

Here is your friendly reminder that we will gather August 6th, at 7 p.m. (in person or online) for the commemoration of the 76th anniversary remembrance of the American bombing of Hiroshima. Presented by Arkansas WAND, Arkansas Coalition for Peace and Justice, Arkansas Peace Week, Pax Christi Little Rock, and students from Pulaski Academy, the event is a reminder of the urgency to rid the world of living under the threat of nuclear annihilation.

Dear Dick,

At 8:15 a.m. on August 6, 1945, the United States brought the nuclear age crashing down on the citizens of Hiroshima — annihilating much of the city in an instant. Three days later, the U.S. unleashed a second bomb on Nagasaki. An estimated 200,000 civilians were killed in the attacks and countless others were left with a lasting legacy of suffering and harm.

76 years later, we commemorate the victims of the bombings, share the words of the hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors) who continue to suffer from the effects of radiation, and do all that we can to amplify their call for a world free from nuclear weapons. We carry their stories with us not just today, but every day, as stark reminders of what’s at stake and what is possible.

In a show of global solidarity, organizations and individuals around the world are folding paper cranes — a universal symbol of peace — and sharing them on social media along with calls for real action toward a nuclear-weapon-free world. Please join Global Zero and Cranes For Our Future this Peace Weekend (August 6-9) to rally behind our shared vision of a safer and more prosperous world.

Now is the time for action. With growing tensions between nuclear-armed states and expanding arsenals, it’s no secret the world is moving in the wrong direction. Plans to invest in expensive and dangerous new weapons in the midst of a pandemic and worsening effects of climate change irresponsibly increase the existential threat and undervalue the role luck has played in keeping us from global nuclear catastrophe. We cannot wait for another Hiroshima or Nagasaki before we act.

Not only must we eliminate nuclear weapons in our lifetime, we can. The Global Zero Action Plan provides a step-by-step blueprint for the total elimination of all nuclear weapons, everywhere. And we work everyday to put this plan into action. From activists on the ground to advocates in the halls of government, it will take sustained global pressure on nuclear-armed states to recognize real leadership is rooted in bold vision and cooperation, and that real security cannot be built on threats of mass destruction.

Thank you for all you do to advance our shared goal of a world without nuclear weapons. We won’t stop until we get there.
