| 9:12 AM (1 hour ago) | | | | | Dear Dick, Police killings of unarmed African-Americans. Pipelines deemed too dangerous for majority white communities rerouted through indigenous lands. Muslim, Arab and South Asian communities surveilled, infiltrated, and deemed suspicious based only on their religion, ethnicity, or national origin. Whistleblowers treated as spies and jailed for exposing the criminality of the national security state. We've seen dynamic social movements rise up to challenge these human rights abuses. But we've also seen those movements come under attack by police and politicians. What do we do when human rights defenders are attacked? At Defending Rights & Dissent, we stand up and fight back. Our role is to defend the human right defenders. Because without them our human rights are seriously in jeopardy. The right to free expression is a fundamental human right. That's why the US Bill of Rights, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the International Covenant on Political and Civil Rights protect it. Free expression, free assembly, and free association aren't just fundamental rights. They are the tools that human rights defenders rely on to fight back against the abuses. Today is Human Rights Day. It's the 70th anniversary of the ratification of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. so we can continue to defend the right to protest, organize, and speak out,
so we can continue to defend the space for social movements to emerge and flourish

Dear Dick, 70 years ago today, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, marking the first International Human Rights Day. Since then, activists worldwide continue to fight to have these rights upheld and respected. Since 1948, we have seen countless human rights victories. But sadly, we’ve also seen new atrocities, many of which culminate in human migration. In Europe, we continue to see tensions rising from the over 100,000 refugees who have arrived by sea in 2018 alone. In the United States, we are watching another crisis unfold. The Trump Administration's tear-gassing of women and children seeking asylum is just one of many blatant violations of international human rights treaties against refugees and asylum seekers. While the political pendulum will continue to swing back and forth, let's focus on what we can do at home, in our own communities and schools. In our 6-part films series, Home is a Human Right, Brave New Films examines issues related to immigration in the U.S. that impact undocumented and refugee communities. On this 70th anniversary of International Human Rights Day, we urge you to help change the narrative and make a positive impact by hosting a free screening of this powerful series. Do you belong to a community group or faith community where you could screen Home is a Human Right? Are you a student or educator who wants to bring Home is a Human Right to your campus or classroom? You can even host a screening in your home to educate your friends and family or to help raise money for one of the great organizations working on the front lines (we can even help you find and connect with some of those organizations!).
