Father’s Day for Peace Newsletters #4 and #5
Google Search Father’s Day June 21, 2015: As usual, with one exception (responsibility to children) in seven pages I found only commodification, entertainment, food and drink. The attraction to armed force instead of diplomacy and to violent masculinity instead of cooperation is so powerful in the USA that there’s no Father’s Day equivalent of Howe’s Mother’s Day for Peace (https://zinnedproject.org/2014/05/mothers-day-for-peace/). But there are protests of business-as-usual Father’s Day, and alternative ways to signalize it.

Father’s Day
A Prayer for Fathers Music Download
Dr. L. Edward Phillips composed this anthem for Father's Day at the request of the choir director at his wife's church, where the choir was small and the resources for Father's Day few. Parts are mostly unison with some division to three part and a two-part canonic treatment at the close.
On this Father’s Day, or another time during the month of June, take time in your family for reflecting together about fathers.

Veterans For Peace is dismayed by news that the Obama administration is sending 450 more troops to Iraq, and is considering building additional U.S. bases in the war torn country.
We remind President Obama of his own words, as reported by many news outlets in August 2014:
"There is no American military solution to the larger crisis in Iraq… The only lasting solution is for Iraqis to come together and form an inclusive government."
Veterans For Peace calls on the President to bring all the troops home now and to use diplomacy instead of more violence to address the fighting in Iraq and Syria. <Full Statement>

Waging Peace and Justice
June 2015
Last month, members of Veterans For Peace participated in our first national Lobby Days. This year, we discussed the Budget and Military Spending, Diplomacy with Iran, Stop the Militarization of Police Act, and the Relief for Victims of Agent Orange Act. We hope to expand on these efforts next year. At the same time, the Swords to Plowshares Belltower stood outside the Lincoln Memorial for the week leading up to and on Memorial Day. During this time, thousands of people traveled across the country to visit the national monuments. With many Memorial Day ceremonies taking place, VFP members educated the public on the true costs of war. On Memorial Day, as part of the Full Disclosure Campaign, VFP Members placed hundreds of letters at the Vietnam Wall. The letters were provided by VFP members, allies, and others who were alive during the Vietnam Wall and were addressed to those who had died there.
Speaking out against war is never easy. Moving beyond ourselves, our allies, and our like-minded social circles can be intimidating, and at time, emotionally tolling. The members and volunteers who participated in last month’s DC actions exposed an array of people to the Veterans For Peace message. Although not all individuals we encountered shared our beliefs, we were able to involve more people in the conversation about peace. As peacemakers, we can learn a lot from these efforts and continue to look for creative and genuine ways to expose more people our message.
Take Action This Month!
Here are some suggestions for taking action this month. If you would like tabling materials, please e-mail casey@veteransforpeace.org.
Golden Rule Christening – June 20th S. 1493 Fay Ave Samoa, CA 95564[map]
After over 5 years of restoration, the Golden Rule is ready to sail! The ship that sailed out into the Pacific in 1958 to halt atmospheric nuclear weapons tests in the Marshall Islands was rescued from a watery grave and lovingly restored by members of Veterans For Peace. The christening and launch will take place on June 20th, 2015. Check out the event page for more info.
Fathers Say No to War! – June 21st [across the country]
As fathers (and veterans) who are opposed to war, Father’s Day is an opportunity to write a Letter to the Editor, Op-Ed, poem, or blog post. Please send your reflections/writings to casey@veteransforpeace.org by June 18th to be posted on our national website and our social media pages by Father’s Day. Drone protests will be happening at Beale AFB on June 22nd, with this theme “Fathers Say No to War”. We are calling for VFP members and allies to organize their own solidarity actions during this time. Check out the Beale AFB event page for inspiration!

WHAT KIND OF FATHERS DO WE NEED? NOT WARRIORS BUT COOPERATORS AND DIPLOMATS
J. William Fulbright: Can an Empire Change Its Attitude? Posted by tbaker | February 20, 2014in The Free Weekly.
J. William Fulbright
If you previously knew anything about J. William Fulbright, it was probably of his educational exchange program, one of the world’s most admired peacemaking innovations. One proposed exchange, as recounted in his last book, The Price of Empire, never began.
In the early 1970s Fulbright approached the Soviets to apply part of their World War II Lend-Lease debt owed to the U.S. to Fulbright fellowships…. The Soviets had agreed to repay about $800 million, and Fulbright hoped to get “maybe a hundred million.” But the détente was sabotaged by a group of Cold War senators, and the Soviets abrogated the exchange agreements and other joint ventures in retaliation.
The story has a larger meaning. . . .His purpose is “to stimulate public thought and discussion free of the rigid and outdated stereotypes which stultify many of our foreign policy debates.” This is a main duty of Congress, he writes, “under our Constitutional system.” We should and can rid ourselves of dogmas dangerous to humans, such as the Evil Enemy. . . .
In his last book, The Price of Empire(1989), Fulbright’s guide to a humane community and global culture of peace continues to unfold. By practicing international cooperation, joint international ventures, negotiation and diplomacy, international understanding, a cosmopolitan perspective, knowledge, facts, reason and empathywill gradually reduce fear, paranoia, parochialism, nationalism, jingoism, fanaticism, arrogance, militarism and wars.
The world was made by human actions; actions are based on attitudes; and it is “possible to alter human attitudes,” he believes. Wars are not inevitable (speaking of today: nor are empire and warming); we can learn, and we must choose. [I shortened the article slightly. –Dick]

WHAT KIND OF FATHERS DO WE NEED? NAOMI KLEIN AND POPE FRANCIS CALL FOR RESISTANCE TO CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES OF CLIMATE CHANGE (these two items came from Common Dreams June 20, 2015)
Climate Change Is a Crisis We Can Only Solve Together by Naomi Klein "The weight of the world is not on any one person’s shoulders. Not yours. Not mine. It rests in the strength of the project of transformation that millions are already a part of." | ||
'Climate Is a Common Good': Pope Francis Calls for Justice on Warming Planet by Jon Queally "What makes the pope's message so radical isn’t just his call to urgently tackle climate change. It’s the fact he openly and unashamedly goes against the grain of dominant social, economic and environment policies." |

This Father's Day, pins and needles [Gay Dads]

Hi James – For over 20 years, my dads have built their lives together and raised me, my two brothers, and my sister. But they’re not just amazing dads – they’re also plaintiffs in the Supreme Court case that, at any moment now, could make history by extending marriage to all. To my dads: I love you both so much, and I am SO proud of you. You’ve shown us so much love, and you’ve taught us to fight for what we believe in. Happy Father’s Day! To all the other families out there: while we’re all on pins and needles waiting for the Supreme Court decision, I hope you remember what my dads taught us kids – love is what makes a family. We’re thinking of you, and of what this long road to the Supreme Court decision means to all families. With love and anticipation, Tevin Johnson-Campion for the ACLU Action team P.S. I asked my dads how they're feeling leading up to the Supreme Court's decision. Head over to my Tumblr to read what they had to say! |
