Mom, girls jump from burning home into cops' arms
Jan. 1, 20153:51 PM EST
CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) — Several police officers formed a human net to catch a woman and her two young daughters as they jumped from their burning home in southern New Jersey.
Camden County police said the fire on Atlantic Avenue in Camden was reported around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, when residents notified two officers who happened to be on patrol in the area. They told them the woman and her children, ages 4 and 7, were trapped on the home's second floor.
Two other police officers soon arrived at the home, and all four gained entry by kicking open the front door. They tried to find the family, but thick smoke and heavy flames hampered their efforts.
One officer collapsed and was helped out of the home as another officer shouted for the mother to take her children to a rear window, police said.
Six other county officers who had responded to the scene circled beneath the window and locked arms, creating a human net. They encouraged the mother and her daughters to jump and safely caught all three.
The woman and her children remained hospitalized in critical condition Thursday with undisclosed injuries. Their names were not released.
One officer was treated for severe smoke inhalation and was released from a hospital Thursday.
"I'm extremely proud of the heroic actions taken by officers who responded to this fire," Chief J. Scott Thomson said. "They risked their lives without hesitation to make sure that the children and their mother got out, and because of their actions, this family is alive today."

AND MEMORIAL DAY (see OMNI’s Memorial Day newsletters http://www.omnicenter.org/newsletter-archive/, see dates above)

Instead of Warriors killed fighting unnecessary, illegal wars, let us celebrate those who tried and are trying to prevent the killing.  Let us truly strive to stop the expansion of the National Cemeteries!  Link to Peace, Justice, Ecology Heroes:  http://www.omnicenter.org/leaders-for-peace-justice-and/  Let us celebrate firefighters, teachers, all workers killed in the line of duty.

Memorial Day, it seems to me, should also honor the Thoreaus, the conscientious objectors, the anti-war protesters, who attempted to forestall or shorten the more unjust or immoral of these wars. It isn’t only the fallen soldiers who served the nation, but also those who worked to ensure that no soldiers fell in unjust wars, in wars that after the UN Charter was passed in 1945, would be designated as ‘illegal.’ "   Juan Cole, Informed Comment, May 27, 2013

FROM MADISONITES TO TRUMANITES: THE CORPORATE-MILITARY/PENTAGON-SURVEILLANCE/NSA/CIA-SECRECY-FEAR-MAINSTREAM MEDIA-NATIONAL SECURITY COMPLEX
A new book makes important distinctions that clarify who deserves praise for SERVICE.   In National Security and Double Government (2015) Michael Glennon identifies two governments ruling the US in national security—one possessing ostensible power, which he calls the Madisonites, the other real power, the Trumanites.  Instead of the familiar labels of conservative and liberal, Republican Party and Democratic Party, he engages us in an altogether different way of perceiving our political history and particularly that of national security.   The Madisonites assume the continued power over all aspects of government of the traditional set of institutions—the president, Congress, and the courts.  But a separate network actually controls the massive, trillions of dollars security policies and practices.  A few hundred executive officials “sit atop the military, intelligence, diplomatic, and law enforcement departments and agencies” and make “most of the key decisions concerning national security, removed from public view and from the constitutional restrictions. . . .The United States has, in short, moved beyond a mere imperial presidency to a bifurcated system—a structure of double government—in which even the President now exercises little substantive control over the over-all direction of U.S. national security policy.” (6-7).
Thus the celebration of “the troops” for their servicein defending US freedom against global enemies is called into question by the actual purpose and consequences of those wars:  “greater centralization, less accountability, and emergent autocracy” (7).

A NOTE ON CLIMATE CHANGE
Every newsletter now contains an explicit or implicit reminder that everything is related to climate change.  The planet will need all the nonviolent, cooperative service it can muster to help nations and populations adapt to the extreme weather, rising seas, droughts and fires, and impaired water and agriculture ahead.  Conversion from the waste of militarism to the caring institutions is imperative.
