Global Day of Action on Military Spending, 2015, War Resisters League
On Monday 13th April, groups across the world took action on military spending. The Global Day of Action on Military Spending (GDAMS) is now in it's fifth year, and WRI affiliates took action to highlight the huge amounts of money that are wasted on military expenditure across the globe.
In Finland, two WRI affiliates came together to display a banner reading "If we had $1.8 trillion, we'd would #movethemoney to education, renewable energy, healthcare" in multiple languages. Members of South Korean group World Without War are currently touring Europe, met with members of AKL (the Union of Conscientious Objectors), and took part in the action.
UK affiliate Trident Ploughshares helped to organise, through the 'Scrap Trident' coalition, a mass blockade of the Faslane base from which the Trident submarines, which carry nuclear missiles, head out to sea. 34 people were arrested, and workers were sent home for the day!
Also as part of GDAMS, a delegation of Hibakusha (survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki) released a statement while travelling on Peace Boat, calling for for the reallocation of resources from the military "to the realisation of a world free of nuclear weapons and lasting peace."
According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Insitute (SIPRI), global military expenditure stands at $1,776 billion. This is a drop of 0.4% since 2013, but increases in spending in Asia and Oceania, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Africa have largely matched decreases in Western and Central Europe and North America. Funding for the war on terror is listed as “Overseas Contingency Operations” and totals $47 in this breakdown. “Past military” represents veterans’ benefits plus 80% of the interest on the debt.* For further explanation, please go to warresisters.org. These figures are from an analysis of detailed tables in the Analytical Perspectives book of the Budget of the United States Government, Fiscal Year 2015. The figures are Federal funds, which do not include Trust funds — such as Social Security — that are raised and spent separately from income taxes. What you pay (or don’t pay) by April 15, 2014, goes to the Federal funds portion of the budget. The government practice of combining Trust and Federal funds began during the Vietnam War, thus making the human needs portion of the budget seem larger and Source: 1040 Forms and Instructions 2013, Federal Outlays for FY 2012 Government Deception The pie chart (right) is the government view of the budget. This is a distortion of how our income tax dollars are spent because it includes Trust Funds (e.g., Social Security), and most of the past military spending is not distinguished from nonmilitary spending. The creation in 2003 of the Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS) — a second “defense” department — brought that war home. While military style policing, especially in communities of color, grew with the war on drugs in the 1980s, access to the weapons of war has proliferated through Pentagon and now DHS programs. “Current military” on the pie chart incorporates the variety of federal agencies that contribute to the militarization of our lives. • Leaflet with this flyer year-round and on Tax Day, April 15, 2014, or on the Global Day of Action on Military Spending (demilitarize.org). From 2010-12, they loaned 700 surveillance flights to local, state, and federal agencies. • U.S. taxpayers throw $786 billion a year at weaponized “security.” Meanwhile food insecurity (hunger) is at record levels for the fifth straight year in the U.S. sources (more on our website): “Homeland Security: The Second Defense Department,” nationalpriorities.org; urbanshield.org; “Secrecy at the Border,” onthemedia.org; Rise of the Warrior Cop by Radley Balko; “Little restraint in military giveaways,” bigstory.ap.org “America’s tendency is to pursue policies that react to violence rather than prevent it.
